BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Third-ranked Charles Howell carded his fifth and sixth consecutive rounds in the 60s to move into a tie for the lead after Monday's first two rounds of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
Howell, who finished sixth at the season-opening Preview and recorded the seventh-best round in OSU history while ending fourth at last week's Red River Classic, recorded scores of 68 and 66 at the par-71 Old Overton Club, sharing the second-round lead with Adam Scott of UNLV.
However, Howell's teammates did not fare as well, and OSU finds itself in eighth place heading into the final round. The team shot back-to-back 4-over rounds of 288 Monday and stands at 576, 19 shots behind leaders Georgia and Clemson.
J.C. DeLeon, who continues to impress as a true freshman, and 10th-ranked senior Edward Loar are tied for 37th at 147, five strokes over par. Anders Hultman (+6) and Landry Mahan (+8) rounded out the OSU lineup.
The event concludes with a single 18-hole round Tuesday.
