Men's Golf Hopes To Continue Momentum

STILLWATER, Okla. ? One week after setting school and possibly national records with its stunning victory at the Red River Classic, the fifth-ranked OSU men?s golf team heads to Birmingham, Ala., for the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
OSU carded a 22-under-par round of 266 on the final day of last week?s Red River Classic to win the event with a school-record score of 813, an astounding 51 strokes under par. All 12 individual scoring rounds for OSU were under 70, helping the Cowboys set school records for final and single-round scores. The 51-under overall final score is also believed to be a school record.
Senior Edward Loar, who won the Jerry Pate as a freshman in leading OSU to a 1996 victory in the event, leads the Cowboys? lineup into the tournament. The 10th-ranked Loar will be joined by third-ranked teammate Charles Howell as well as J.C. DeLeon, Anders Hultman and Landry Mahan. Howell finished fourth at the Red River while DeLeon, a true freshman, and Loar tied for fifth.
The tournament?s 12-team field boasts 10 top-25-ranked teams, including five of the top six, in the latest MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. The 12 teams in the field include No. 1 Clemson, defending national champion and third-ranked Georgia, No. 4 UNLV, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 8 Houston, No. 11 Florida, No. 14 Minnesota, No. 20 Auburn and No. 21 Arizona as well as UAB and Alabama.
The tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday at Old Overton Country Club. The field in this annual tournament, whose selection committee has included Arnold Palmer and Ben Crenshaw as well as Jerry Pate, is considered one of the strongest in regular-season play.
Two rounds will be played Monday. The first tee times are at 7 a.m. CST, with Clemson, Arizona, Oklahoma State, UNLV, UAB and Georgia in that first wave. Alabama, Florida, Houston, Arizona State, Auburn and Minnesota are in the 7:50 a.m. wave of tee times. The second round will commence at approximately noon in those same groupings. Tee times for the final 18 holes begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The top three team leaders will be in the 8:50 wave with their No. 1 players, usually the tournament individual leaders, teeing off at 9:30.
