STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team recorded its first shutout of the fall season Wednesday, as the Cowgirls routed Seminole State, 14-0, at Cowgirl Stadium.
"The most important thing is the zero up there," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "We have played two straight, 20 innings total, with no errors and we were rotating a lot of kids through during this. I thought our pitching was really good tonight. Those are the things that are conducive to teams playing well."
Senior Whitney Whitehorn led the way for OSU in the circle, pitching four shutout innings to earn the win. Whitehorn surrendered just three hits and faced two more than minimum during her time in the circle Wednesday.
"It's a great feeling to go out and put up zeroes because it makes our hitters' jobs easier because they can go up and relax at the plate," Whitehorn said. "I think we just want to throw strikes and try to not throw a lot of pitches to try and get some innings."
Logan Simunek replaced Whitehorn in the top of the fifth inning, but the Cowgirls didn't miss a beat, as she posted three shutout innings of her own. The final Cowgirl to step in the circle Wednesday was transfer Emmie Robertson, who recorded six strikeouts and allowed only a single runner over the game's final three frames.
After the 10-inning shutout, the Cowgirl pitching staff has not allowed a run in 19 consecutive innings.
"We had some strikeouts this evening as well, which we haven't been accustomed to the past couple of years," Gajewski said. "Emmie Robertson threw the ball well and her tempo is just awesome. We're getting better out there. Coach (Jeff) Cottrill has worked really hard and I'm happy with the job he has done."
Offensively, Oklahoma State continued to look sharp as well, with Maddi Holcomb again leading the way at the plate.
Holcomb finished 3-for-3 against Seminole State, scoring three runs and driving in two more. After Wednesday's performance, she is now 7-for-8 with eight runs and three RBI so far this fall.
"I'm really working on just slowing down," Holcomb said. "That's something that I've been preached at about, so I'm slowing down my approach at the plate. I'm hitting away more and really focusing on my short game and right now everything is going well."
Six Cowgirls recorded multi-hit contests against Seminole State Wednesday, with Holcomb and freshman Sydney Pennington's three hits leading the squad.
Pennington is another Cowgirl that has been in fine form this fall, as she posted her third multi-hit showing in as many appearances after a 3-for-5 day at the plate Wednesday. The Sand Springs, Oklahoma native is tied with Holcomb for the most hits by a Cowgirls so far this fall with seven.
Holcomb, Pennington and the Cowgirls will be back in action Thursday night against Cowley County at Cowgirl Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
