TULSA, Okla. – For the first time since 2007, Oklahoma State swept a three-game Bedlam Series against Oklahoma as the 17th-ranked Cowboys bested the No. 18 Sooners, 9-2, in Sunday's series finale at ONEOK Field.
The win was the seventh in a row for the Big 12-leading Cowboys, who improved to 15-3 in conference play and 27-14-1 overall. OSU outscored the Sooners 27-3 in the weekend series; the Pokes also had a 7-1 win over OU in a non-conference game in Norman earlier this season.
OSU has won five consecutive Big 12 series – four of those have been sweeps as the Cowboys have also been perfect against TCU, Kansas State and Kansas.
For the second time in the series with the Sooners, OSU slugged three home runs, with Trevor Boone, Jon Littell and Colin Simpson each going deep. Boone finished the contest 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while Simpson also had three hits and two RBIs; Littell drove in three runs and had two hits.
Jonathan Heasley picked up his first-career Big 12 win and improved to 3-3 on the season as the right-hander worked five innings and struck out six while allowing just one earned run on four hits. Reza Aleaziz tossed three shutout innings in relief of Heasley before C.J. Varela came on for a perfect ninth.
OU (28-18, 10-8) took its only lead in the series with an unearned run in the second inning, but it was short-lived as the Cowboys struck for two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Christian Funk led off the frame with a single, and Boone followed with an RBI double to tie the score. After advancing to third on Michael Neustifter's infield single, Boone put OSU on top when he scored on a double play.
The Pokes doubled their lead to 4-1 in the third. Following a leadoff walk to Ryan Cash and a double by Matt Kroon, Simpson collected his first RBI with an infield single. Up next, Littell delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to put OSU up three.
OU plated its final run in the fifth, but the Cowboys answered when Boone led off the sixth with an opposite-field homer over the wall in right, his fourth round tripper of the season that gave OSU a 5-2 advantage.
The Cowboys put the game away in the seventh and eighth innings. OSU struck for three runs in the seventh, with Littell smashing a two-run homer and Neustifter driving in a run with a double, before Simpson sealed the rout with his Big 12-best 14th home run of the season in the eighth.
OSU returns to action with the first of four non-conference road games this week Tuesday at Oral Roberts; first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. in Tulsa. The Cowboys will then travel to Iowa City for a weekend series at Iowa beginning Friday.
