STILLWATER – Oklahoma State recorded its first shutout of the season Friday night as the 17th-ranked Cowboys took the opener of the Bedlam Series with an 8-0 win over No. 18 Oklahoma in front of an overflow crowd of 4,121 fans at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Â
The win was the fifth in a row for OSU as the Big 12 Conference-leading Cowboys improved to 13-3 in league play and 25-14-1 overall.
Â
Carson Teel tossed eight scoreless innings and racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts to earn the win, while the Cowboys' offense provided plenty of firepower with three home runs on the night.
Â
OSU jumped on the Sooners (28-16, 10-6) early with homers in each of the first three innings. Matt Kroon got things started with a solo blast in the first before a two-run shot by Cade Cabbiness gave the home team a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Â
In the third, it was Colin Simpson leading off the inning with laser shot over the right field wall, a round tripper that gave him 13 on the season to tie him for the Big 12 lead.
Â
Working with a four-run lead, Teel dominated the OU lineup. In improving to 6-2 on the season, the junior southpaw allowed just five hits and one walk and posted multiple strikeouts in four innings.
Â
Teel allowed just one runner past first base in his eight-inning effort, that coming on a one-out double by Brylie Ware in the seventh.
Â
The Cowboys put the game away with a four-run rally in the sixth. Jon Littell led off the frame with a double, and after stealing third, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Christian Funk to put OSU up 5-0.
Â
OSU would record five hits in the inning, with Carson McCusker collecting an RBI single before Ryan Cash's two-RBI base hit completed the scoring.
Â
Cash and Simpson both finished with two hits in the contest, while Michael Neustifter was 3-for-4 at the plate.
Â
The series now shifts to ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Okla., for the final two games. Saturday's contest is set for 7 p.m. while Sunday's finale begins at 3 p.m.
