Post-Dual Quotes: OSU vs. Edinboro
February 09, 2018 | Cowboy Wrestling
Head Coach John Smith
Â
On Nick Piccininni:
"He's 1-2 against that kid, now 2-2. That was a good match for Nick. He's a tough kid. He's been tough for Nick to score against. We also need to recognize that Nick's done a pretty good job with his defense. The kid got to his leg a few times with high crotches and Nick fought him off."
Â
On his overall thoughts about the win:
"Overall tonight, (we wrestled) pretty good. I thought we had a couple of guys struggling to score points and struggled in their match but I liked what I saw from the standpoint of 174 and 197. Two guys we had in there replacing some guys."
Â
On Derek White:
"Derek White did a good job of separating the score against a pretty good heavyweight. For somebody that we didn't know how he was going to do, he scored five takedowns and picked up a major decision. I was pretty impressive."
Â
On Chandler Rogers:
"I'd like to see him wrestle a little bit more. I do like the pins too. He can pin anybody. The competition and the people that you're facing, it's good to see him pick up the pin. In a big match like against Oklahoma, it's likely we might need that pin. You just want to see him do it in critical times."
Â
On Andrew Marsden:
"He scored a lot of points… Marsden weighed in at 197 for the second or third time of the season and it's nice to have a body that can go up and be competitive.  Your number two guy can't win a lot of times in division one and it's good that we have a guy that can win. I've said it all along that scoring points, I respond to that. Regardless of how you're doing it. I just really enjoy scoring points. Some guys just struggle doing that... I feel real fortunate we have Marsden."
Â
Boo Lewallen – 149 pounds, RSo.
Â
On his performance:
"It was a good effort. I'm still just looking to score points in every position. That's my big focus right now. That's what I want to do."
Â
On going straight from a reversal into a fall:
"That's hard to do. No matter who the kid is, it's tough to do. I'm just looking forward to Sunday."
Â
On Sunday's dual against in-state rival Oklahoma
"It means the world to me. I've been to Bedlam matches since I was growing up. This is a big match for me, and I'm ready to go."
Â
Chandler Rogers – 165 pounds, RJr.
Â
On his performance:
"Usually you see unranked guys and you've got to be careful. Like last week, I wrestled an unranked guy and got caught in a sticky situation. I was sore the next day. Coach (John Smith) always says to take things seriously and some of these guys are scrappy. Their ranking has nothing to do with it. Some guys are just scrappy and they like to roll around and do different things. It could hurt you, and it's too late in the season to risk allowing this guy to do anything to hurt you. If there's an opportunity to pin, I always want to take it."
Â
On what he learned from last weekend:
"It was a bad match. I wasn't feeling very good that day. You can drop a million excuses, but it just wasn't my day. I wanted to come back and make sure nothing like that ever happens. I wanted to stay solid, really. If you mess around with these guys, they can steal a match, and you don't want to give them the opportunity."
Â
On what Bedlam means to him:
"I've heard stories, and I've heard about all of these matches. I know guys on the other team. It's just as much of an attitude that we need to bring to them than we did to Iowa. It's personal. We don't need to beat these guys, we want to beat these guys. We hate them. They hate us."
Â
On Smith's message during the week:
"(He stressed to) just take things seriously. You look at (Northern Iowa) and we've never wrestled them before in a dual. We didn't really know what kind of team they are. Coach is the only one who really knew that. We tried to feel them out, and we didn't take things seriously. We took the easy road out. I personally was on bottom and I could've worked myself out, but I just laid there and went into sudden victory and I could've lost the match. This week, we amped up our training and our mentality. We feel as good as we have all season."
