Postday Quotes - Kajikawa Classic Day One
February 09, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
Head Coach Kenny Gajewski
On defeating Arizona and recapping the day:
"Obviously this one was a really good win. In the first game, I didn't think we played well. But credit Oregon State for what they did. I thought we bounced back though. I'm excited for Emmie (Robertson). We had that big home run in the first inning that really got this team rolling like we can. I'm just excited for these kids, but the most important thing now is that we have to come back out tomorrow and play well again."
On the performances of Vanessa Shippy and Madi Sue Montgomery:
"Shippy has been awesome all day. She had five hits and then a bunch of walks and made some nice plays at third. Madi Sue (Montgomery) had really a tough day in the first game, but the way she bounced back - with two big home runs when we really needed them. She's a seasoned kid and just a kid that we saw her first year and we're seeing her healthy again now and feeling good."
On Vanessa Shippy setting the OSU career walks record:
"Consistency. She's a stud and obviously one of the best players to put on the Cowgirl uniform ever. I'm just proud of her. I'm proud of the way we've used her and moved her around and she's never complained. She volunteers to do things and she's just a great kid and a tremendous competitor. I'm very proud and she's going to shatter a bunch of records before this year is done."
On Samantha Clakley and Emmie Robertson's debuts:
"I'm excited about these two kids. Sam was a little unlucky today and kind of put herself in some bad spots too. That's just the way this game works. She'll bounce back tomorrow for sure. Emmie was really good. I could just tell. I asked Jeff (Cottrill) how she was in the bullpen and he said her heartbeat was good and it carried over. She's a kid who took a big risk to leave her school and come her to show people that she's capable of this. I'm very proud of her for making it happen."
Utility Vanessa Shippy
On reaching base in all eight of her plate appearances Friday:
"I just thought I was seeing the ball really well today. That's something I've been really working on in practice - tracking balls out of pitcher's hands. The best part about getting on base so much was the fact that we have so many good people like Sydney Pennington and Madi Sue Montgomery behind me that if I can just do my job and get on base, these girls are going to bring me around and they proved that today."
On setting the OSU career walks record:
"It means a lot. That's what my whole job has been here is to get on base. I've know that its been my role since day one and I'm just glad I can do that again. To be on base for those people behind me - we have such a powerful offense this year that the more baserunners we can get on base, the better we're going to do, obviously. Just being able to do that so many times helps put our team in a good position and I'm glad I can do that."
Infielder Madi Sue Montgomery
On her bounce-back performance against Arizona:
"I think I just saw the ball really well. I just wanted to go up there and see the first strike. I was tired of being hesitant and worried about it. I wanted to be more aggressive and just knowing that I'm going to be OK and to have that confidence in myself is a lot of what I think helped me."
On what the victory over the Wildcats does for OSU:
"I think it just helps with our momentum. We already knew we were good, but when you can knock off a team like that, it kind of shows us that we really are good. I think coming together and playing as well as we did on offense, defense and pitching will just help us throughout the rest of the season."
