Postgame Quotes vs. TCU
September 23, 2017 | Cowboy Football
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy
Â
Opening statement:
"Well, that wasn't as fun as the last couple of games we played. It was really pretty simple. When you lose the turnover battle, (you aren't going to do very well). We didn't play very smart or very disciplined. And really, we got out-coached. I thought that they had better plans, and their players executed their plans better than we did. In looking at it from the outside without watching the tape, early in the game we made a couple of decisions that weren't very good and set us behind the eight ball.
Â
"They did a good job with the run. They rushed for about 238 yards. Way too many. A little bit over four yards a carry or so. This is the first game that we didn't defend the run very well. In the big picture, in most cases, if you don't defend the run very well, you're kind of on your heels.
Â
"Offensively, we turned the ball over. We didn't protect as well as we needed to at times, but (TCU) played really hard. I was impressed with (Kenny Hill). During the week I had mentioned that Hill was playing with a lot of confidence, and I thought I was right in saying that. He has kind of gelled in their system a little bit. They ran the ball effectively. We'll rally back tomorrow. Guys need to let it soak in tonight, and like I say every other week, we've got to let it go. We've got to come back and get ready to play the next game. We expect our guys to come back tomorrow with a big smile on your face. We'll identify where we were deficient in all areas, then we'll get ready to go back out and play next week out at Tech."
Â
On TCU keeping the ball out of the OSU offense's hands early:
"They did a good job maintaining the ball. I think our first three-and-out (defensively) was in the fourth quarter. We've got to get more three-and-outs and get more time of possession. Time of possession is usually a non-factor for us, but this game it was big. Early in the game, we put the defense in a bad situation by turning the ball over. When you do that it snowballs. You don't play smart, you turn it over, and you can't get a three-and-out, and you're playing a good football team so you lose."
Â
On the difficulty of converting deep pass plays today:
"Their safeties played high. I mentioned in the press conference that I would expect them to play high. And then we didn't run the ball as effectively so it's simple. When they play off, we've got to run the ball, but if we aren't going to run the ball when they play off, we've got to be really good on the underneath stuff. We did hit a lot of that, but not enough when we were in catch-up mode...When you're in catch-up mode and they're playing deep, you're not going to run by them on average, and that's what you end up with."
Â
On the offensive line play with two starters out:
"Those guys have to make plays. They've got to play. There isn't anything we can do about that. When we lose guys, the next guys have to come in, and they have to make plays."
Â
Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer
On TCU's offense
"They came out wide open in their attack, and we had some kids who didn't get adjusted well to some of their motions. So that's collective accountability. We all got a piece of it, we all own it."
On the loss
"The highs aren't high enough in what we do, and the lows are way too low."
On the focus moving forward
"We as coaches have to say we all own this, and we are gonna get a chance next week to make it a lot better."
On OSU's defense
"They've got some good skills guys, I knew that, but I'm disappointed in how we didn't finish in a lot of reps."
Â
Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich
On injuries
"Anytime you have injuries it's going to make it tougher, but there is a difference between acknowledging that fact and making excuses."
On TCU's defense
"They played good coverage. One, they cover well, and two, they did a nice job mixing in their coverages."
On the Cowboys' offense
"Our identity has been tempo and so we continue to try to go fast at times and when you're not moving the ball as well, that becomes a factor."
Â
Â
Oklahoma State wide receiver Jalen McCleskey
Â
On his reaction to the game:
"Our coaches put in a great game plan this week, and it's on us to go out there and execute that game plan. TCU is a great team, and they have a great group of guys. They came out and played well within their game plan and so we just need to execute better."
Â
On the takeaways heading into next week against Texas Tech:
"The biggest thing, no matter if we win or lose, is to come in tomorrow, break down the film, correct the mistakes and then head down to Texas Tech and play as hard as we ever have."
Â
Oklahoma State running back Justice Hill
Â
On his immediate takeaways from today's game:
"We have to play better. We can't turn the ball over and expect to win games. We have to go out and execute everything that we've prepared for better next week. I think we had a good week of preparation this week, but we just have to go out and execute."
Â
On the offense's ability to run the ball against TCU:
"I thought I could've run better today, to be honest, because you have to be able to go out there and make plays."
Â
Oklahoma State safety Ramon Richards
Â
On his reaction to today's game:
"TCU played a good game. They come out every Saturday like we do, and they prepare just like we prepare all week long."
Â
On his takeaways heading into Texas Tech next week:
"I don't know yet. We have to look at the film and see what we find. The biggest thing that I feel like we had today was penalties. We had a couple of penalties on third downs and gave them conversions off penalties. It's nothing that is unfixable or uncorrectable, and we can go back into the film room tomorrow to fix it."
Â
On the team's mindset switching heading into Texas Tech next week:
"We're ready to win again. We're ready to win. That's our mindset regardless of any game, whether we win or not. We always come prepared and ready to win."
Â
Oklahoma State defensive end Cole Walterscheid
Â
On his takeaways from today's game:
"TCU came out and played hard. They outplayed us today. They had a good game plan, came out and executed that plan today."
Â
On how the team's focus switches toward Texas Tech:
"The second that clock hit zero and this game was over, our focus has shifted toward Texas Tech. We're 100 percent focused on Texas Tech, and we're going to try to go out to Lubbock and take it to them."
Â
TCU head coach Gary PattersonÂ
Â
Opening Statement
"Number one, they have a good football team. Good quarterback, good skill. To come here and beat them is hard to do. It's been a great group. I like them. I'm really excited about the offense. Running backs, Darius Anderson, great job for only being a sophomore and giving us what we need. If you want to win championships, you gotta be able to throw it, but you gotta be able to run the football. Especially on the road. When it counted we had to run the football."Â
Â
On stopping OSU's offense
"We knew they were gonna make a surge. When they go fast, and he [Mason Rudolph] gets hot, you gotta maintain him. You're not gonna stop him. We changed more coverages than I have changed in a while."Â
Â
On Gundy and OSU
"Coach Gundy has really done an unbelievable job here. Fan base here is unbelievable. I love playing here. It's the first time we won here, and I love playing here."Â
Â
On being underdogs
"We wanted to be 3-0 going into this ballgame to give ourselves an opportunity. We wanted to be relevant. Our program has had our times when we've been relevant, and that's what you want to do. You want to win enough ballgames that people take notice. It was also an advantage for us that no one was giving us a chance. We play a lot better like that. Always have and always will. We've always been a better underdog. Outside of that, it was a really good football game. It's hard to go win on the road."
Â
TCU quarterback Kenny Hill
On OSU offense and Mason Rudolph...
"It's all about trusting the game plan. Mason is a heck of a player and very talented. We just wanted to do whatever it took to get a win."
Â
On his maturity and TCU as a whole...
"I feel good. Confidence in the offense and confident in what we are doing and the understanding of it all and what it takes off the field too. I feel good, especially after a game like this."Â
Â
TCU running back Darius Anderson
On the coaches' confidence in the running game this year...
"I feel like they have a lot. The fact that they trust us helps us to keep working and keep pushing so we can stay on the run game because we know we excel in that area."
Â
TCU defensive end Ben Banogu
On being a possible Big 12 Championship contender...
"People can say what they want to say, but we know who we are. We strive to be the best team every day, but you don't just get there after a big win, you have to do that throughout the season."Â
Â
On TCU defensive line against the Oklahoma State offense....
"Guys knew that the style of offense that OSU has is similar to ours. They like to go fast."
Â
On the game overall...
"I feel like our guys really stepped up and we made plays that came to us and we also went and got some plays. We had a relentless motor about us today."Â
Â
TCU safety Nick Orr
On defending the OSU receivers…Â
"Oklahoma State has a ton of good receivers, but I felt like we were good too on our back end. We have a lot of experience back there, and people that have been doing it for a long time. That really helped out."
