May 01, 2017 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State senior guard Phil Forte III was officially declared the 2017 NCAA Division I statistical champion for free throw percentage.
With his clip of 95.5 percent (84-of-88), Forte broke the OSU single-season free throw percentage record that was held for the last 56 years by Moe Iba, who shot 92.6 percent (63-of-68) from the stripe in 1960-61.
Forte now owns the No. 1, No. 3, No. 12 and No. 21 best free throw percentage seasons in Oklahoma State history.
The Flower Mound, Texas native topped Princeton's Devin Cannady (93.8 percent, 76-of-81) and FIU's Donte McGill (92.9 percent, 105-of-113) to become just the third NCAA statistical champion in OSU basketball history. Forte joins Arlen Clark (85.2 percent in 1958-59) as the only Cowboys to lead the nation in free throw percentage, while Doug Gottlieb was the 1998-99 NCAA statistical champion for assists with a clip of 8.8 per game.
Forte's career mark of 88.3 percent (393-of-445) ranks behind only John Lucas III, who shot 89.5 percent (161-of 181) from the line over his illustrious OSU career. Forte's 393 career makes rank 10th in OSU history, while his 445 attempts are 18th.
Almost as accurate from distance, Forte broke the OSU career 3-point record with 329 makes. His 1,746 career points are sixth in program history.
