Cowgirls Sweep Tech With Sunday Doubleheader
April 23, 2017 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER ---- Home runs and timely hitting led the Oklahoma State Cowgirls to a doubleheader sweep and series sweep of Texas Tech Sunday at Cowgirl Stadium. OSU defeated the Red Raiders, 9-1, in five innings in the first game, before earning its second-walk off victory of the series in a 6-5 win in the second.
Â
The Cowgirls blasted four home runs between the two contests to propel themselves to the eighth sweep of Texas Tech in program history. This marks the third time in program history OSU has won four-straight Big 12 series.Â
Â
"Really proud of these kids for the way they just continued to fight," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Obviously a big conference series win. I'm just proud of the way these kids just continued to take it one game at a time and continued to get performances out of kids. To get the performance from Logan was huge. It's exciting to be 11-1, and have a chance to go play a top 15 team in their ballpark coming up."
Â
Oklahoma State (32-17 Overall, 11-1 Big 12) once again found itself in a tie game after six innings in the series finale. With a 5-5 game, Vanessa Shippy walked and Kristin Reasnor doubled to right field for her second walk-off hit of the weekend over the Red Raiders.
Â
The game featured plenty of offense between the two teams. Tech started it off with a run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Randee O'Donnell and Rylee Bayless each had an RBI in the bottom of the second to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead after two.Â
Â
Texas Tech (17-26, 4-11) sent a three-run home run to center in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead. O'Donnell delivered again in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 4-3.Â
Â
The Cowgirls bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth with Taylor Lynch and Reasnor home runs to give OSU a 5-4 lead. The home run was Lynch's first of the year.
Â
Tech tied the game in the top of the sixth at 5-5 before Reasnor's eventual walk-off hit.
Â
Reasnor, Madi Sue Montgomery and O'Donnell led the way at the plate. Reasnor went 2-for-4, Montgomery was 2-for-2 and O'Donnell finished 2-for-3.
Â
"I'm never really worried about a game," O'Donnell said. "Yeah when you're down you gotta score, but we're going to. We have the people on our team to push through whenever we need to."
Â
Logan Simunek (6-3) earned the victory in the circle for OSU.
Â
The first game was all OSU from the start. Haffner and Montgomery RBIs gave the Cowgirls an early 4-0 lead they wouldn't surrender after one.
Â
After a Tech home run in the second, Bayless responded with one of her own in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-1 Cowgirls after two.
Â
From there, OSU scored four-unanswered runs the final three innings to secure the victory in five innings.
Â
Montgomery and Haffner led the way at the plate. Montgomery went 2-for-2 with three RBIs while Haffner went 2-for-2 with two.
