AMES, Iowa – Taylor Olson's golden goal in the 97th minute lifted No. 19 Oklahoma State to a 2-1 win over Iowa State Sunday at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Â
The victory marked only the fourth time OSU has ever won in Ames as the Cowgirls improved to 11-2-2 overall and 4-1-0 in Big 12 Conference play.
Â
OSU dominated the match statistically, outshooting the Cyclones (2-10-2, 0-4-1) by a 29-11 count while owning an 11-2 margin on corner kicks.
Â
The Cowgirls took the game's initial lead 12:53 into play. Following a short corner kick, Julia Lenhardt delivered a pass to Kim Rodriguez, who blasted a shot from 25-yards out top shelf to the far post to put the Cowgirls up 1-0.
Â
OSU controlled much of the attack throughout the opening half, but Iowa State was able to tie things up in the 29th minute. Michela Ongaro dove to make a save of a Courtney Powell shot but was unable to hold the ball, and Stella Strohman was there to send the rebound into the net for the equalizer.
Â
The match went into intermission tied 1-1, and the Cowgirls came out of the locker room creating numerous scoring opportunities that resulted in several near misses.
Â
The first of those came when Haley Woodard got behind the ISU defense and delivered a shot that charging ISU keeper Anotonia Reyes was able to stop. Minutes later, Anna Beffer blasted a 19-yard shot that deflected off the far post, and a follow shot by Rodriguez went just wide of the mark.
Â
OSU continued to press throughout the remainder of regulation, with yet another attempt hitting off the crossbar, this one by Lenhardt, among the 15 shots the Cowgirls took in the second half.
Â
None of those would find the net, however, as the match went to overtime still knotted at 1-1.
Â
The Cowgirls would finally break through for the game winner at the 96:25 mark. Beffer drilled a shot off the crossbar, and Olson raced in to head the rebound in for a golden goal. Olson's goal marks her sixth of the season, tying her for the team lead, while Beffer added to her team-high assist total with her ninth of the year.
Â
OSU returns to action Friday at Texas Tech.
