TCU Postgame Quotes
January 23, 2017 | Cowboy Basketball
OSU head coach Brad Underwood opening statement:
"I thought it was a very good TCU team and I thought they were really the aggressors in the first half, as evident by the rebound difference. We were minus 11, which doesn't happen very often. We knew coming in that Kendrick Williams was a beast on the boards. He had nine [rebounds] at half and just three in the second. I thought the in second half we were able to play with a little better rhythm. We were getting transition baskets and the second half was really just Jawun's game. It was his game to manage and we got him in the open floor with a lot of switches and we got him to the rim. We had 50 points in the paint tonight, and that's a big number, so that was something that was very important. The last 10 and-a-half minutes of the game, we were 10-of-15 from the field and we did what we had to do: we made free throws. We were 20-of-21 from the foul line and we closed the rebound margin, and when you do that, you have a chance to win."
Â
On Jawun Evans' game management:
"He's caught foul trouble in different games and he's coming off a ball game where he played 16 minutes against Tech because of foul trouble. He adds another dimension. He gets guys easy baskets and I think our pick-up point game being a little different on the defensive end has helped him as well. That's the Jawun we know and love and we know how effective he can be. Tonight, the other thing that was big was that he had eight assists and one turnover. Those are the numbers you want out of an elite point guard."
Â
On turnovers:
"We didn't turn it over in the last two minutes. We were trying to close a game, we were trying to build on the lead and they kept making runs. But, when you don't turn it over and make free throws, we really limited their offensive rebounding in the last 8-10 minutes of that ball game and that was something that gave us a chance."
Â
On Jeffrey Carroll's night:
"We had a period in the first half when Mike Boynton on the bench was barking at me about Jeff not having a shot, but I have to do a better job for creating things for him and getting him shots. He was so efficient. He's so good in transition, he runs the court so well and it's a big, big part of what we do."
Â
On Davon Dillard:
"He was terrific. He didn't do anything that wasn't in our goals or our plans. He's got the ability to be an elite defender because he's so 'country strong' and he's got quick feet. When he eliminates those mistakes, he can guard multiple positions. I thought it was good to see him hit a three because he hits them all the time in practice. The only negative he had was that he missed our one free throw."
Â
OSU guard Jawun Evans
Â
On his changes after Texas Tech:
"This game I just tried to stay out of foul trouble. I tried to play defense with my feet and not my hands."
Â
On his passing:
"I just paid attention to the game and watched film. It's what I see every time I come down."
Â
On winning two straight games:
"It feels great. I just want to keep the momentum going. I think defense is what did it for us. We talked about some stuff and changed some things and it has been great for us."
Â
On the upcoming non-conference game:
"I think it's going to help us out even more. We can go out and battle that and then come back in conference and play a great team."
Â
On how the team closed out the game:
"Just playing defense at the end of the game, in the last 3 or 4 minutes. At first, we kind of slacked off on defense, but now we picked it up and we're getting stops and rebounds."
Â
On offensive chemistry:
"There's been a lot more chemistry. We're just looking for each other more and more. We're just getting easy buckets and that is what we're looking for. We talk about it, too. So that's been helping us out."
Â
On Davon Dillard's dunks:
"I was amazed. I tried to go back up and get the ball, then I'm getting dunked on. I had a great laugh out of it."
Â
On Dillard's recent performance:
"He's just been working hard. He's trying to get better and he's listening and taking everything in. He's going out and playing hard and giving everything he has."
Â
OSU guard Davon Dillard
Â
On his dunks:
"It's exciting giving the fans something that they like. Just giving them something they like and trying to fill out the gym again. It's fun going out and doing what I do best, playing above the rim."
Â
On increased playing time:
"It's just come from buying in on what coach Underwood wanted me to do. I told him, 'Whatever I need to do for this team to help us win, I'll do it.' It's just practicing harder and being more of a leader to the younger guys and things like that."
Â
On playing behind Jawun Evans:
"Jawun is a good player, but what he does best is getting his teammates involved. Just to see him get going and doing things like that, it gives us a spark. Especially me coming off the bench. It gives me an edge. He just does a great job with that."
Â
TCU head coach Jamie Dixon opening statement:
"Congratulations to Oklahoma State. Obviously a good game for them. Tight game down to nine minutes, 10 minutes left. They simply outplayed us down the stretch and got a 13-point win in a game that was tied. It was a good win for them and a disappointing loss for us."
Â
On free throws:
"We got to the foul line. We made our free throws, but then I look at them and they shot 95 percent and we shot 91. They even out shot us there."
Â
On his team's performance:
"We simply got out played. Evans was better, Carroll was better and Forte. Those guys played really well, so you got to give them credit. I didn't feel good about how we played tonight, to be honest. I thought the rebounding was good. We were up by about 10 or 11 at halftime. It spoke to playing hard, but we got knocked around. They were more physical than us, and it caught up to us in the end. Here it wasn't good for the entire 40 minutes, which is what you need to do to come up here and win."
Â
On the play of OSU:
"The other thing that really hurt us was Mitchell played well. They got Dillard off the bench, and they got N'Guessan. They hurt us too. They obviously got above their numbers."
Â
On the slow start:
"I didn't think we played well early, and to think we were tied up. The rebound was the only thing that kept us in it. We were tied and still shooting horribly from the three. I didn't think our defense was sound."
Â
On Carroll's late three-pointer:
"We got to make a play, and as Carroll hits the three that bangs around and goes. I thought we actually guarded that one pretty good. How that went in, I still don't know. This is a three-game losing streak. Everyone has been telling us what a surprise we are. We are better than people thought."
Â
On his team after the Baylor loss
"There is a lot of disappointment after the Baylor game. To have the crowd and have the atmosphere. To be up by one, then have a wide open three to be up by four. Couple minutes left. We were disappointed, but we responded well at practice on Sunday. Obviously a quick turnaround, but they have the same turnaround."
Â
TCU guard Kenrich Williams
Â
On the mood after the loss:Â
"Everybody in the locker room is disappointed. We knew this was a game that we should have won. We are disappointed. Coach was too."
Â
On getting the offense back on track:
"Just come out and practice every day and do what coach says and translate it to the game. The ball was sticking a little bit but it's just part of it. It's something we can work on and something we can improve."
Â
On if losing three games in five days is harder than the other losses:
"Yeah, because we know these games we should have won, but we just got out played in all of them. But, moving forward, we will come out and practice harder and start the game off differently moving forward."
Â
On if a longer break will be good for them:
"I think it will help. It gives us rest. We have to come in and practice hard and translate it to the game."
Â
On if OSU did anything that surprised them:
"They just played harder than us. They have a good team. They are a good team and we got out played tonight."
Â
On Jawun Evans:
"He is a tough guard. When he gets a full head of steam, he is quick and he can make plays when he has the ball in his hands. It's tough guarding him but it is what it is."
Â
TCU forward Vladimir Brodziansky
Â
On coming on late in the game:
"Coaches were just telling me to stay and stay focused, keep going, don't give up. I was just trying to play harder, give more effort in my shots, finish a little bit stronger."
Â
On getting OSU's bigs in foul trouble but then OSU extending the lead:
"They just played harder than us. We took too many jump shots at the end. Ball just stuck in our hands, a little bit selfish. And they made shots and we made shots, that's how it goes."
Â
"I thought it was a very good TCU team and I thought they were really the aggressors in the first half, as evident by the rebound difference. We were minus 11, which doesn't happen very often.
