Post-Dual Quotes: OSU vs. West Virginia
January 20, 2017 | Cowboy Wrestling
Head Coach John Smith

Opening statement:
"When you know it is going to be a lopsided score, you don't get everything you want out of matches like this. We had some good. Nick did a good job at 25 setting the pace and putting the hammer down when he needed to after getting a major decision last week. Kaid Brock again scored points in the first period and not sustain it on the second and third. Those are things we have to recognize and be hard on yourself. Not that he wrestled badly, but you just need to make sure you are taking care of the second and third period and being a little more solid with it. He scored three take downs in the first and the second and third period won four to two. Try to judge it that way. Overall, it was a pretty good effort. I think Joseph Smith can't find his own offense, and hasn't really earned the right to fill it yet, so we will see how that will develop. Good win by (Chandler Rogers) against a tough kid, ranked eighth in the country. Maybe trying to hold on a little bit in the third, and gave up a takedown. Those are things you don't like to see. You do like to see what (Kyle) Crutchmer did with the pin, Nolan Boyd with the tech fall. We had a good effort by Derek White at 197. He's got the ability to score points on his feet but for some reason he's holding back. I think that if he can find the confidence to go out and put points on the board, I think he will find himself in a place he really is working to be. (Austin) Schafer ended if with 16-0. Lot of good. It's a hard match when you walk away and think you should have done better."
Â
On Preston Weigel not wrestling:
"Just being careful a little bit. Had a minor injury yesterday. Enough that we needed to pay attention to in a match you know you're not going to need him. I'd of like to see him wrestle. He was ranked sixth in the country. It would have been a nice chance to have back-to-back top 10 guys, but it just felt like we needed to be a little bit careful."
Â
Nolan Boyd – Senior, 184 pounds
Â
On bouncing back after a loss in the Iowa dual:
"This was a lot more fun than that but nothing really changes, I just got exposed and luckily I exposed myself to me. So I got to work on some of the things this week. Hopefully we can see a completely different wrestler but if not, we'll see little incremental growth. I am taking everything as an opportunity."
Â
On style of play in duals against a team like Iowa and a team like West Virginia:
"I'd say for me, I try to wrestle them all the same. Obviously, there's different mind games that go on in your head, but I don't think they should. I like to take them all the same, take the same amount of risks in each one and just focusing on cutting loose and doing what I can do."
Â
Nick Piccininni – Redshirt freshman, 125 pounds
Â
On being the first one out there:
"It's a little bit of pressure, but it's definitely a pacesetter. So I'm looking to set the pace high. Not just for myself, but for the rest of the guys following behind me. It's very important for me to start it off. Just go hard and feed the energy to my teammates and the crowd.
Â
On the depth of the team:
"That's definitely what Oklahoma State is about. We're tough. We've got multiple guys in our room that are top 10 in the nation. It's throughout multiple weight classes in our lineup."
