Kansas State Postgame Quotes
January 18, 2017 | Cowboy Basketball
Oklahoma State head coach Brad Underwood
Â
Underwood on Kansas State:
"I have to give a lot of credit to Kansas State, and it started with their guard play in Kamau Stokes and Barry Brown. We have to guard better." Â
Â
Underwood on Oklahoma State's defense:
"We've got to guard better on the perimeter. It's been a recurring theme in conference play that we are struggling to guard the perimeter, and we have to get better with that."Â
Â
Underwood on Kansas State's offense:
"We allowed a team to come in here and shoot 60 percent on our court, and give a lot of credit to them. They are an extremely well coached team. They execute and execute their game plan, and they were good tonight."Â
Â
Underwood on moving on to Texas Tech:
"We are going to continue to fight and continue to get better and get ready for the next one on the schedule. We are going to prepare like crazy and we will see if we are good enough on that night." Â
Â
OSU point guard Jawun Evans
Â
On the difference in first half and second:
"The first half we were pushing the ball, getting up the court, getting fast breaks and getting steals. The second half, we kind of went away from that, slowed the ball down, and it hurt us. I have to push the ball more in the second half. And give them credit, they got back in defense in the second half. So, that kind of helps them."
Â
On the losing stretch and keeping spirits up:
"It's very tough, because you know that nobody likes losing. We are playing great teams. We need to get one win, at least, and get us on the road."
Â
On coach Underwood's message:
"Just go out and play hard. Leave it all on the floor and leave our hearts on the floor."
Â
OSU guard Jeffrey Carroll
Â
On what has caused this losing streak:
"Guarding. Just being tough and talking, but guarding."
Â
On the team's next step moving forward:
"We play defense in practice pretty hard every day, but we just have to carry it over to the game. For 40 minutes, just do it and play tough."
Â
Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber
Â
On the win:
"I think we were all in our own pity party. It was hard. We went through an emotional 10 days and you can't change it. All you can do is help yourself. I talked about us having to have emotion and that was the most important thing. We had to have some pride on defense and we still gave up 88 points. At least the second half, where people have torched us, we did a much better job. They only had 34 points and shot 40 percent. We had to do it together and we all did it. You have five guys in double figures and the bench guys did a nice job of coming in and making sure we finished the game. Isaiah [Maurice] did some good things in the first half. Wes's [Wesley Iwundu] line was 15 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists and that's what I kind of dream of all the time. And then Barry [Brown] played really, really well. They all did. Kam [Kamau Stokes] was pretty good. He took it to the hoop with 7 assists. Xavier [Sneed] was really good. He got a little overanxious down the stretch and maybe scared us a bit. But it was just a good team win and a great road win. We've been so close and something good happened. If you have a good attitude, good things will happen."
Â
On second half adjustments:
"One, we got stops. We said if we got the stops we could push and take advantage of the easy ones. And then if you don't get stops and put them in situations, you really can't run your stuff. Because they're [Oklahoma State players] just up their line and overplay. Sometimes we just did a guard-on-guard ball screen, dribble in and we got a layup. We went backdoor a couple times. We did a variety of things. I told our kids, 'you make me a good coach tonight. I can't draw up anything. I can tell placement and spacing, but you have to make the plays.' I think the biggest about the first half was we got in the lane and took bad shots. In the second half, we made jump stops and gave it to people. We made the easy passes and the easy play. I thought we had a couple and-ones, but it was great for our kids. They were happy and they deserve it."
Â
K-State guard Wesley Iwundu
Â
On the second half:
"I think we just worried about ourselves and how we responded. In these types of games, the second half has been our downfall. Coach is always talking about energy in the second half, so we were trying to get some things going."
Â
On his play after Kansas State's first timeout in the second half:
"I think that was a perfect timeout because things were starting to slip. They hit some shots and we needed to regroup ourselves. We needed to change our mindset about the second half."
Â
On the back-and-forth defensive play:
"It was a point to get stops in the end. In a game like this, it's pretty fast paced. Both teams scoring back-and-forth. It was going to come down to who got the stop at the end of the game. I think we did a good job of buckling down and getting that stop."
Â
On the fatigue:
"We kind of knew what to expect in this game. They play pretty fast with hard and aggressive defense. We knew it was going to be up and down, but I was tired I have to admit. But I think we did a good job of fighting through it and it doesn't get better than this. When we play West Virginia, it'll be even faster. So, I think we need to do a good job of taking care of our bodies, recovering and getting prepared for the next game."
Â
K-State guard Barry Brown
Â
On his scoring compared to last year's game at Oklahoma State:
"I was just happy. It was a big shot for the team [his 3-pointer late in the game]. I was filled with a lot of emotion, so I let it out on the court."
Â
On the fatigue:
"I feel like we all did good. I didn't realize I played that many minutes, but I feel like I caught my second win and I was able to feed of my teammates' emotion and not think about being tired or fatigued. I feel like I played off them."
Â
On what the win means for the team:
"This is a great win for us. Like I said last year, we didn't win many road games. So with this great crowd and atmosphere, it was good to pull this one out. It was great for our team. We all know what we're capable of. So to come in here and do this, this win is big."
Â
