August 19, 2016 | Cowgirl Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. – Oklahoma State opened its 2016 season with a 2-2 draw against Georgia Friday night in front of 1,775 fans at the Turner Soccer Complex.
Â
The Cowgirls got goals from Jaci Jones and Courtney Dike as they outshot UGA by a 28-20 margin, with 14 of OSU's shots on goal.
Â
Georgia took an early lead in the match, going up 1-0 in the 10th minute on a goal by Marion Crowder. After OSU goalkeeper Michela Ongaro saved a header by Lauren Tanner, the ensuing scramble in the box ended with Crowder sending a shot into the back of the net from six yards out.
Â
The Cowgirls recorded the equalizer in the 31st minute. Haley Woodard delivered a cross into the box that a UGA defender deflected but could not clear. The ball went right to Jones, who drilled a shot from 14 yards top shelf as the freshman recorded her first collegiate goal to tie things up at 1-1.
Â
The second half saw OSU take its first lead in the 62nd minute. After Holly Brehmer drilled a long shot that caromed off the crossbar, Dike was there to head in the rebound and put the Cowgirls up, 2-1.
Â
The lead held until the 81st minute when the Bulldogs converted an attack as Tanner dribbled end line and delivered a pass through the box that Katie McGinntie was there to send in, tying the score at 2-2.
Â
The extra 20 minutes saw few scoring opportunities from either side as OSU held a slight edge on shots, 3-2, while the Bulldogs recorded the lone shot on goal.
Â
Anna Beffer and Haley Woodard led OSU with five shots each, while four of Woodard's attempts were on frame.
Â
The Cowgirls conclude opening weekend with a Sunday match at Mercer. Kickoff is set for noon (CST).
