WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Oklahoma State's Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center was tabbed as one of 12 winners in the 35th annual United States Tennis Association Facility Awards program, which recognizes excellence in the construction and/or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country, it was announced this week by the USTA.
The home of both the men's and women's tennis programs at OSU, the facility will be honored at the USTA Semi-annual Meeting at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City on September 1 at an awards luncheon.
"It is a great honor to have the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center recognized by the USTA as one of the outstanding facilities in the country," OSU Director of Tennis and Cowgirl head coach Chris Young said. "We believe we have one of the premiere facilities in college tennis and this honor further validates that."
"I am excited for everyone who has had a hand in helping us build such an outstanding facility."
The Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center, a $17.5 million facility dedicated in October of 2015, will be recognized in the Educational category. It is one of just two facilities honored this year in the category, joining the McCallie School Strang-Voges Tennis Center in Chattanooga, Tenn.
"Great tennis facilities like the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center help us to grow the game at the grass-roots level and we are proud to recognize them for their ongoing impact on the sport of tennis," said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. "The Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center has embraced many of our tennis initiatives and kept the sport at the forefront of its community each year."
Featuring 12 outdoor courts as well as six indoor courts, the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center served as the host for the 2016 Big 12 Men's and Women's Championships as well as a first- and second-round site for NCAA play the past two seasons. The facility was made possible by a lead gift from Michael and Anne Greenwood, which is the largest single gift given to Oklahoma State by a Stillwater resident.
Facilities were judged on the following criteria: overall layout and adaptation to site; excellence of court surface and lights; ease of maintenance; accommodations for spectators and press/officials; aesthetics; graphics (including the use of signs and landscaping); amenities such as casual seating for spectators, food services and social areas; and the facilities' participation in USTA programs.
