Hatch Named Big 12’s Best Again
May 09, 2016 | Cowboy Baseball
IRVING, Texas — Oklahoma State's Thomas Hatch was brilliant on the mound again last week, and the performance earned the Cowboy sophomore Big 12 Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week honors, it was announced by the league office today.
For Hatch, who shares this week's award with Oklahoma's Alec Hansen, this marks the second time this season he has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week as he also earned the honor on April 25.
In capturing the award, Hatch also helped OSU set a conference record as it became the first school to have seven Big 12 Pitcher of the Week award winners in a season. The Cowboys have had 10 total league weekly award winners in 2016, which is tied for the second-most all time behind Baylor, who collected 11 honors in 2012.
Hatch continued to dominate opposing offenses as he tossed his third consecutive shutout in Friday's series opener to lead the Cowboys to a 9-0 win over Prairie View A&M.
Hatch's shutout marks just the 10th time in Big 12 Conference history that a pitcher has recorded three shutouts in a season (the league record is four), and he is only the second Cowboy of the Big 12 era to achieve the feat, joining Andrew Heaney (2012) on that list.
Along with becoming the first OSU hurler to toss three-straight shutouts during the Big 12 era, Hatch extended a pair of scoreless innings streaks. He has not allowed a run over his last 29 2/3 innings, and he has gone the last 35 1/3 innings without giving up an earned run.
In Friday's contest, Hatch racked up a career-high 11 strikeouts and did not issue a walk. The right-hander took a perfect game into the seventh inning before back-to-back singles opened the frame. Those would be the only hits he gave up in the game, and he quickly got out of any trouble with a strikeout and inning-ending double play.
Hatch needed only 93 pitches to complete the game, and he faced just one batter over the minimum.
In improving to 5-1 on the season, Hatch lowered his Big 12-best ERA to 1.36. He also leads the conference in innings pitched (86.0), while ranking third in strikeouts (71) and fifth in opponent batting average (.227).
