Oklahoma State To Host Special Olympics

STILLWATER – For the 33rd year, Oklahoma State University plays host to the Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games. The action runs this Wednesday through Friday, May 11-13, with more than 5,000 athletes set to participate.
Special Olympics Oklahoma athletes will compete in nine sports: Athletics (Track and Field), Bocce, Bowling, Golf, Horseshoes, Powerlifting, Unified 3-on-3 Basketball, and Unified Softball. Other events include Motor Activities and Stars of the Future.
Boone Pickens Stadium and Gallagher-Iba Arena are among the competition venues, and Hall of Fame Avenue, immediately north of Boone Pickens Stadium, will serve as the Olympic Village. The complete schedule of events includes opening ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Gallagher-Iba Arena and Celebration Night, which includes a variety of options for Special Olympics participants to choose from, including a dance party at Stillwater HS, a movie in the OSU Student Union, a swim party at the Stillwater YMCA or bingo at the OSU Student Union.
Perhaps the most electric competition venue is the weight room in Boone Pickens Stadium, where OSU's director of athlete performance Rob Glass oversees the powerlifting competition with help from OSU student-athletes starting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
"Hosting the Special Olympics is very rewarding for all of us and it's our pleasure to be part of the powerlifting competition," Glass said. "You can't beat the joy that competitors feel when they succeed."
