STILLWATER - Oklahoma State was one shot away from the upset the previous game against Oklahoma. Jeffrey Carroll's shot at the buzzer almost bounced off the backboard and into the book of Cowboy legends that would be told for years to come.
It was inches away.
"That's something I've dreamed of," Carroll said. "That night, I couldn't sleep honestly. Just knowing that if I would have fixed just one minor thing it could have gone in. It could have changed our season. It's tough. I just have to move on and get ready for Wednesday."
Move on is something Carroll and the Cowboys will have to do, but they can do so with something in mind.
It almost happened once this year, so why can't it Wednesday night in Norman? Why can't these Cowboys rally together and finish what they started?
"We've got to overachieve," coach Travis Ford said. "Dig deep inside and find more, that ridiculous effort, that unbelievable performance that will give us a chance at this point because that's what it's going to take. But the great thing about it, I've been around sports long enough, that's happened before. There's no question it has happened before. Why can't that be us at one time? There are no guarantees; there are no promises of it. You don't know. That can happen. But you have to have the right approach for that to even come out."
Why not this game? It is Bedlam after all, the series famous for producing spectacular outcomes. Although this banged-up Cowboys team has struggled in recent games, it doesn't count itself out. The belief is still there.
"We're still going out there every night to play as hard as we can," Carroll said. "So (the belief) is still there."
They know it will be a great challenge. The team that was a shot away from the upset earlier in the season isn't the same team that will take the floor Wednesday.
The Cowboys will walk into the Lloyd Noble Center banged up and without Jawun Evans, who captured America's attention with his 42-point outing against the Sooners.Â
Tyree Griffin, who has stepped into the starting role for Evans, said he doesn't feel the pressure to replicate the performance. He is going to go play his game, nothing more and nothing less.
"No, I really don't," he said. "He made shots and played a pretty good game against Oklahoma. He played a lot of good games. We're just going to go out there and play our best."
That's all the Cowboys can do at this point, play their best. Give the same effort they've been giving because they know what this game means.
"It's a big game," Griffin said. "Not just to us but the fans. We want to give everybody what they're coming to watch. We're going to try to play a good game and win."
They also know what a win could do for this team, this resilient group of Cowboys.
