Cowboys Make History at Notre Dame
February 20, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
South Bend, Ind. – The Oklahoma State track and field program ended its indoor regular season on a high note Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
Despite holding the No. 7 spot in the DMR nationally, and the top-time in the Big 12 coming into the competition, coach Dave Smith wanted more out of his team and the quartet of Chad Noelle, Brandon Singleton, Tre'Tez Kinnaird and Josh Thompson delivered.
The Cowboy team finished the relay in 9:26.60, smashing OSU's previous best in 2016 by nine seconds and breaking the 3-year-old school record by two seconds. The impressive feat also put the Cowboys in elite company as they clocked the third fastest time in NCAA history and tied the Alex Wilson Invitational meet record that was set back in 2013.
"Everybody just ran great for us out there," Smith said. "Josh ran a 3:56 as the anchor, which would be a huge personal best, and Tre'Tez and Brandon also had amazing legs after Chad opened it up for us. I think today shows that they are a serious threat to win the national title."
Savannah Camacho set a massive personal best in the 800-meter final by winning the event in a Big 12-leading 2:03.48.
She broke her previous best from just a week ago by two seconds. The All-American's time puts her at No. 3 in the nation and No. 2 on OSU's top-10. It was the seventh-best American time in the event this year.
"Savannah moved up there past Kaela and I think that shows that, as a team, we're peaking at the right time," Smith said. "At the conference meet, it's more about beating people than timing and we've shown we have the ability to do that. So hopefully we can compete for a conference title."
On the men's side, Bradley Johnson broke into the Cowboys' record book with his 1:50.50 in the 800. He finished seventh in the event and took the No. 7 spot on OSU's top-10 list.
"He showed some improvement," Smith said. "He ran his best time this season by two seconds, which I think is a good sign that he'll be ready for the Big 12 race."
With the results at Notre Dame finalized, OSU now turns its focus to the postseason with its first test coming up next weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames, Iowa. Last season, the Cowboys finished third and the Cowgirls took fourth at the conference championships.
