OSU Postgame Quotes vs. Texas Tech
November 12, 2016 | Cowboy Football
Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy
Opening statement
"As always, if you come to a game in Stillwater during conference play, you're probably going to get your money's worth. I've said that each week. I was really proud of our team today in all three phases. We played a very similar game to what we played against West Virginia. Offensively, we were good. The quarterback (Mason Rudolph) was good, and we were able to rush the ball."Â
Â
"Defensively, we started out really well, and then they made some plays. They're going to make some plays. I think (Patrick) Mahomes is a first-round pick, and he showed that today in different areas. I suggested to him after the game that he comes out early, and if he's looking for an agent, then we can find somebody. He's a nice young man. When you play a team like that, that has a quarterback with those capabilities, then it's going to be pretty exciting in the end."
Â
"I was really proud of our team. I thought Mason matched (Mahomes). He was really good today. He missed maybe one or two throws today, but mentally, he was really sharp. I thought that game plans in all three phases were good. They got us on a fake punt. They made a nice adjustment at halftime and I was surprised they could get it off with the pressure we were putting on him, but they did a nice job with the fake punt. On the onside kick, we called it and we knew it. The ball bounced over our guy's shoulder, but we were there and in position to make the play."
Â
"It was a good college football game, and a great win for us. I think we stayed healthy, so that's exciting. I want the team to be able to enjoy it tonight, but then we have to be able to get back to work tomorrow. Whether you have really good wins like this or if you lose, you've got to go back to work Sunday. There just isn't enough time to lose our focus for one day. I'm happy for the guys and ready to go back to work."
Â
On the Team's Ability to Win Close Games
"No fear, no frustration and no fatigue is what we talk about...Truthfully, I talk to the players about the core values and the accountability we have in our program. I wish I could give you and X's and O's, or say that I could give a Vince Lombardi pregame and halftime speech. I think it's the overall concept of our program. It's our nutrition, it's our sleep method that we use, it's our strength training. I think that at the end of the games, we're somewhat fresh. I know they scored at the end of the fourth quarter, but we got more pressure on (Mahomes) in the end of the fourth quarter than we did the entire game. He made three fantastic plays, so what are you going to do? I thought we had him stopped, but we just couldn't get him at the last second. I'm not sure what it is. I think there is some truth to them believing in themselves makes a big difference. When you start to win over a period of years, you feel like you're going to win. Your mind is much more powerful than the physical part of your body, and we believe in that, so they just play hard and I'm proud of them. I told them in the locker room that it's fun for me to sit back and cross my arms and watch them play, even though the games are exciting and pressure-packed. It's fun to watch them. They like being around each other, they're good young men, they play hard, and as a coach, what more could you ask for? Nothing."
Â
On Switching to the 3-3-5 on Defense
"The risk of making a wholesale swap is whether you can make your adjustments. When it was taking place, I was a little uncertain. But I'm not a defensive guy, I don't micromanage and I let people do their jobs. They felt like that was what is best, so I said "If that's what you guys want and you're comfortable with that, we'll do it." I thought they were pretty dang good at it. There were times that we needed to make adjustments that were more difficult to make based on not knowing the in's and out's of the system, but I thought it was a good move...To me, it worked and I thought it was a good move. It was risky, but when you play a quarterback that is as good as (Mahomes) is, you're going to have to take some risks. It worked out well for us."
Â
On James Washington's Play at the End of the Game
"When we got the big throw over the top, it gave us a boost. We needed a play. We needed one last week in Manhattan and we needed one today, and he was able to go make a big play. Then, he did a nice job on the onside. Tech has been successful on their onside kicks this year. I think this was their fourth and I know they've gotten two. That's a low-percentage play, less than 12 percent. All of those things register in your head. In the end, really good players make good plays."
Â
OSU Defensive Coordinator Glenn Spencer
On the New 3-3-5 Defense:
"We have sprinkled that scheme in, we just don't do it on normal down defense. We have to play some three down and enter the fourth guy. You either bring four or you drop eight. It got us a few series I think and then it was players making great players. The kids practiced well. It wasn't totally new, it was just a lot more of that."
Â
On the Game Plan
"It's a culmination of things. You study tape and you watch what's been successful. Three down, four down, seven down, I don't care. You do what you have to do to win the game. You look at what has been effective against them. This year we needed to invite them to run the football."
Â
On the Defensive Depth
"Well, you knew the game was going to be 100 plays. There were probably about 110 that we played. You knew from the start it was going to be that way. Our guys score fast and it's great. Everyone is celebrating, but then you have to grab a coke and get back on the field."
Â
OSU Offensive Coordinator Mike Yurcich
On the Offensive Efficiency
"I think right now you have to start with the offensive line, they controlled the line of scrimmage. Our quarterback played extremely well, our tailbacks ran hard and the receivers caught the ball. We played with good tempo and our assistant coaches did a great job coaching this week from game planning to adjustments on the sideline to their overall ability to coach our guys. They deserve a lot of credit."
Â
On the Running Game
"It's fun to be able to run the ball well. It gives you a tremendous balance. It takes the stress off the quarterback. It alleviates a lot of different pressures. We were able to call a couple of different looks. The guys in the box did a good job communicating. Whenever you're able to have balance it makes it harder to defend. It was good control."
Â
Chris Lacy
On How the Offense Succeeded
"We just took what they gave us. Whenever they were playing back, we took the underneath routes and whenever they came up, we went over their head."
Â
On the Final Drive
"I just had faith that we would get the first down to where we could run the clock out and win the game."
Â
On What He Can Take Away From This Game For TCU
"We have a very explosive offense. We had a few turnovers but we were able to rally back and get the win."
Â
Rennie Childs
On the Offense
"We basically went out there planning to take what they gave us. We took advantage of everything they gave us and used it to our benefit and made plays."
Â
On the Final Drive
"Oh man. It was crazy. I was just hoping that Chris [Carson] would do what he did and kneel or slide to a knee. It was so smart of him to take a knee."
Â
On Preparing for TCU
"For myself, just keep working my craft and keep making plays when I get the ball. As a team, use this momentum to play TCU. We're going down there, so continue this momentum that we have and just play our hearts out."
Â
Kirk Tucker
On the Team Fighting Through Adversity
"Man, just team camaraderie. Just staying together and making sure that we stayed pumped on the sidelines to keep the whole team going. That's really what got us going."
Â
On the Final Two Drives
"It was really a lot of excitement going on in my mind. I love games like that, when it's just so close and both teams are competing. They have a great quarterback and a great offense. And we do as well. Our defense stepped up and their defense stepped up in big moments. So it was just exciting to see."
Â
On What the Defense Can Use Against TCU
"Just making sure that we keep running to the ball, always. Make sure that we're always competing, staying energized and keeping the sideline energized as well."
Â
Jordan Sterns
On His Final Game In Boone Pickens Stadium
"Man, I never thought it'd come to an end honestly. It came quick and it was just fun. I made sure I soaked it all in and it was a very memorable moment. I was almost in tears. I was in tears at the beginning of the game and almost broke down. But I still have two games left, so I have to keep it together."
Â
On How the Defense Can Improve
"We just have to do a better job of defensively being consistent all the way through the game. The first three drives of the game, we held them to nothing. I don't think they even got a first down. So we just have to come out there with that same fire and keep it consistent."
Â
On the Final Two Drives
"I was just trying to make a play. Trying to do my part and make a play. Make sure I'm doing my job to give up nothing and if the quarterback scrambles, make sure I find somebody."
Â
Zac Veatch
On His Final Game In Boone Pickens Stadium
"It was a blast. To get to be a captain with Mike Wilson on the last home game, my first roommate for my first two years here, that was a blast. The crowd was awesome and the game was intense and fun. You couldn't ask for a better way to go out."
Â
On His Thoughts in the Final Minute
"Just the standard stuff. Stay inbounds and no penalties. Just physical downhill football. Running the rock when we have to."
Â
On the Missed Extra Point
"Man, that's tough. Our defense has been right there all night and they were that close to blocking it. And we put the pressure on him and he shanked one."
Â
On What He Can Take Away For TCU
"Just the same thing every week. Since West Virginia to Kansas State, just playing hard. There are obviously mistakes like too many turnovers. But just keep playing hard no matter what."
Texas Tech Head coach Kliff Kingsbury
On the loss
"They fought. Since that West Virginia game, when we called them out for playing so poorly and without any passion, we asked them to fight, and they fought. We just have to finish those games. It didn't come down to that kick, we should have had a lead and found a way to win. It's just one of those things that happens."Â
Â
On his decision to kick the extra point at the end of the game
"We had the momentum. I liked what we were doing offensively, I liked what we were doing defensively, so I felt great about going to overtime. Our team handled it the last time very well, so that was the plan."
Â
On what he told kicker Clayton Hatfield after the missed extra point
"I just told him, 'I'm proud of the way that he has kicked the last two years.' He's hit a bunch of big-time kicks for us and he'll do it again. He just has to move on to the next one and he'll have an opportunity the next two games to help us win."
Â
On the special teams' plays of the game
"I thought for most of the night, [special teams] executed well. Michael Barden had some big-time plays and we had that great fake punt throw. There was a great onside kick, had a couple of really nice punts and it was really nice to see him step up, but we just didn't finish the game."
Â
On the running game
"I thought [Demarcus] Felton ran tough, I thought [Quinton White, Jr.], when you get to your third running back - actually fourth - it gets a little interesting, but he handled it well. It changed our plan a little bit when it happened, but he ran tough and found a way to find the end zone on that last one. You don't want to get to your fourth running back, I guess, is the key thing."
Patrick Mahomes
"It definitely hurts. We had a lot of chances to win. They found a way to win. We didn't. It is kind of like the whole season. But it hurts. We are going to go out there and fight. We have two games to get bowl eligible."Â
Â
On Running the Ball
"We ran the ball, and that's something we haven't done well this year. They have a good defense and we move the ball. Run it and really open it up more."
Â
On the Trick Play
"We ran it for the last two weeks. We have been installing it every day in walk throughs. Cal ran it, and we liked it."Â
Â
Jah'Shawn Johnson
On Getting Things Together Defensively
"I know we left some opportunities out there on the defensive side. We have to clean up in order to get these next two wins."Â
Â
"I think we are gelled as good as we are going to be. I think, at times, we get undisciplined and start to do our own things."Â
Â
"We aren't creating a lot of turnovers this year. We missed tackles in critical situations."Â
Â
Dylan Cantrell
On the Game Coming Down to One Point
"It might look like that to everyone watching. The last play, the last touchdown. But we had plenty of chances."
Â
"Everyone made mistakes: dropped balls, missed assignments, so it is on everyone, not just one player."Â
Â
On Going For Two on the Last Touchdown
"We didn't even talk about it. We didn't feel confident. I feel confident with our offense in overtime situations. So, we were trying to even it up and get the for sure play, hopefully go into overtime and see what happened from there."Â
Â
Kris Williams
On the Defense
"I think we started out slow. We could've executed a lot better later in the game. We were mediocre."Â
Â
On Picking Up the Fumble
"I just ran to the ball. I think we have good pursuit to the ball. Anything can happen. The ball was on the ground, so I picked it up. I didn't even think they realized it was a fumble, but I did."Â
Â
