Five Things You Didn't Know About Jeff Newberry
September 01, 2015 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – There's more to Oklahoma State guard Jeff Newberry than just basketball. Check out these five things you probably didn't know about the Atlanta, Georgia, native.
Texas Rangers connection:
"[Texas Rangers outfielder] Delino DeShields has been my best friend since I was eight years old. We always played baseball growing up. I took baseball more seriously than basketball until about 10th grade. His dad was our coach and we would stay the night at each other's houses. We've been best friends for the longest time. It's crazy how he ended up in Dallas and I'm at Oklahoma State, so I plan on making the trip as much as I can to watch him play ball."
Watch me whip:
"I've always wanted a Ford Mustang, and I finally got one this summer. My new car is a 2014 black V6. I didn't know I was going to get it this soon. My parents helped me out and I guess I worked hard enough to have it for the beginning of my senior year."
Behind the jersey number:
"My granddad passed away on the 22nd of the month, so I've always worn that number after him. I used to be No. 10 until I switched and I've liked it ever since. Markel Brown also wore No. 22, and he and I had that talk before I came here. Markel was telling me he thought I'd fit the number well. We both do some of the same things, but I'm going to have to pick it up to play up to the level he was playing at this next year."
Sneaker obsessed:
"My favorite hobby outside of basketball is collecting shoes. The coaches are always talking about how I'm wearing all of these different shoes. I like shoes a lot. I probably have close to 100 pairs now, but I've played basketball in so many of them and gave so many away that I can't think of an exact amount. My favorite pairs as of right now are any Jordan 11."
Barber game strong:
"I've had the flat top for about three years and wanted to cut it, but it seems like that's what a lot of the fans know me by. I feel like it brought me some luck last year and I'm very superstitious, so I'm keeping it at least until I graduate."
