Walton Leads Y-D Red Sox To Cape Cod League Title
August 13, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
Oklahoma State senior Donnie Walton capped a successful summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League Wednesday night by helping the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox claim the Arnold Mycock Trophy as league champions for a second-straight year.
Walton, who will be a senior for the Cowboys in 2016, was named co-MVP of the CCBL championship series (along with Ben Bowden) after hitting .333 (5-for-15) with five RBIs in three games to lead the Red Sox over the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
After the Red Sox dropped the opener of the best-of-three championship series, Walton's bat carried them to wins in the next two games. In the game two victory, he was 2-for-5 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the first inning. And in the decisive third game in front of 6,400 fans at Hyannis' McKeon Park, the switch hitter was 3-for-6 with an RBI double.
Walton was drafted in the 23rd round of last June's Major League Baseball Draft by Milwaukee but decided to put a professional career on hold and return to OSU, where has enjoyed three standout seasons. In 160 career games, he's hitting .306 with eight homers, 30 doubles and 92 RBIs, and he is the Cowboys' career leader with 52 sacrifice bunts. A three-time All-Big 12 performer, he earned first-team honors each of the last two seasons.
Despite missing 19 games during his junior campaign due to surgery to remove his hamate bone, Walton hit .326 with four homers and 29 RBIs as the Cowboys' everyday shortstop.
