OSU-TCU Postgame Quotes
November 07, 2015 | Cowboy Football
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy
Â
Opening statement:
"I'm really proud of our team. I'm proud of our coaches, and I thought the defensive staff did a tremendous job in their game plan. The players bought in, and we reduced their reps in practice this week to try and keep them fresh. It worked for us. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I'm just really proud of the guys for being able to run them down some and make some plays.
Â
"Offensively, we were able to get the deep ball going. We felt like that would be an advantage for us going into the game. Mason [Rudolph] did a great job with getting the ball to the people that we needed to. J.W. [Walsh] was able to come in and run his package effectively at that point in the game.
Â
"It was a great win for us, obviously. I'm really proud of everyone in the program. I thought the fans were tremendous. We'll enjoy this one, move forward and go back to work tomorrow."
Â
On James Washington being able to beat TCU with the deep ball:
"We felt like we had an advantage with the way they were defending us and singling him up. We think we've got a few guys who have the ability to make a deep play, and he's certainly got the ability to run down the field and get open. It worked out for us. You don't know if it's always going to work, but it just happened to work in this game."
Â
On TCU outgaining OSU by more than 200 yards:
"Well, we had a lot of big plays. They had 110 plays, and we had 50. Obviously, we probably gave them 100 yards there at the end of the game, but it doesn't make any difference. I don't know that we would think we would hit that many big plays, but there's give-and-take in defenses, coverages and schemes, so we just felt like that would be our advantage."
Â
On the defensive game plan:
"I had confidence in our defense's ability to make plays. We played base defense and ran to the football. There wasn't anything special about what we did, other than some minor things Xs and Os-wise. I said this to you guys before, if there was an answer for [Trevone Boykin] from a scheme standpoint, somebody would have already used it. The answer is to chase the ball down and tackle him in space, in our opinion. We felt comfortable with our team's speed. I used the Kevin Durant example, the one where you don't let him get to 50 points, just let him get to 25. That's what they did tonight."
Â
On Kevin Peterson and Ashton Lampkin returning:
"It's real important that we have enough depth there, especially when they're running 110 plays. We have guys that can play, but when you chase them around for so long, it's eventually going to wear you down. With 10 minutes left to go in the game, I think that their offense and our defense were both tired. They weren't moving as fast so they had obviously run 110 plays. I've said this a lot, but I think Rob Glass is the best in the country at what he does, and I think that shows up in these types of games. The physical condition and nutrition of our team has really worked out well for us to this point."
Â
Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer
Â
On the performance of the OSU defense:
"I want someone to look at the stats and tell me we had a bad game so that I can laugh it off. For these guys, this was outstanding, and I'm so proud of them. It was a huge night. There were 110 gradeable snaps so they probably played 120 when you take off penalties and such. Those guys are exhausted."
Â
On the defense's goal-line stand late in the fourth quarter:
"I'm always a pessimist. I'm always thinking 'they got it in'. The two-point play is what I was thinking of. That was a seven-minute drive. That's another thing people don't understand looking at that yardage is that the only way for us to get beat in that game was for them to throw over the top of us. They burned seven minutes and ended up not getting anything, which was tremendous. Even if they had gotten a field goal or a touchdown, the only way for us to lose it was for me to play it like that time Michael Hunter got beat – that was a bad call. He was in press and by himself. At that point in the game, I kicked myself in the tail. I should've protected those guys more because that was the only way we were going to lose that game."
Â
On the injury to Jimmy Bean:
"It's just like when Ryan (Simmons) went out. Everybody is facing it so nobody feels sorry for you. It really doesn't matter, but I hate it for Jimmy Bean more than I do for me and us. These young kids make a lot of mistakes, and they'll keep playing well. Jimmy (Bean) is going to have a great career, and you've just got to continue."
Â
Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich
Â
On the offense's game plan:
"Each game is a little bit different, depending on who you're playing and their personnel. You want to tweak. You want to have a little bit of a package and a little bit of a wrinkle, but every week, where it's 10 plays or 15 plays, but you have to keep it relatively small so your guys understand the scheme and that you're not throwing the whole kitchen sink at them on Tuesday. It's got to be base concepts and maybe changing formations around to get a personnel advantage."
Â
On James Washington's recent performances:
"He's put together two tremendous games, back-to-back. That's the big thing is that he's consistent. The thing is, if they double cover him, somebody else has single coverage and we said earlier in the week, we have to find the single coverage matchups and throw to the one-on-one. Our guys are going to win those a majority of the time. That's where we have to go with the ball."
Â
On the use of the deep ball in the game:
"We felt good in the game plan, going with some longer shots. You never know how it's going to unfold, but the game plan was to, obviously at times, throw the ball – they were playing too tight, throw the ball down the field. That was always the game plan, and we thought going into the week that would be a big part of it."
Â
Oklahoma State safety Tre Flowers
Â
On the game
"It was fun. That's really all I can say. We had fun making plays, and I'm glad we came out victorious. It was a blessing."
Â
On stopping Trevone Boykin
"We've had the same motto all year, WTIB, which means we're taking it back. It's been the same every game, every week because we have to force turnovers as a defense to be great, and that's our goal. It's been that way from the beginning."
Â
On the 9-0 start
"It's unbelievable to be 9-0, but next up we have to be 10-0. It's just on to the next one."
Â
On winning 11 consecutive games
"Everybody has confidence. Last year is over, and we don't want to think about it. Everybody is just gaining more and more confidence each week, and we're on our way to great things."
Â
OSU linebacker Chad Whitener
Â
On scheming for Trevone Boykin
"It was a very difficult task. Coach Spencer put us in the right position, and everybody just executed."
Â
On remaining unbeaten
"We're going to celebrate as much as we can tonight, but we're going to come back healthy tomorrow and we just have to win next week. We have to get to 10-0."
Â
On the CFP rankings
"We felt a bit snubbed, but our body of work has and will put us where we need to be at the end of the day."
Â
On the second half strategy
"We came out with the same game plan of trying to attack. We had a couple lapses here and there, but we came out with basically the same game plan and we tried to stop them every time."
Â
Oklahoma State wide receiver James Washington
Â
On preparing for the TCU defense
"During the week, the coaches and our scout team players gave us the exact look, and it helped me to be effective in the game today."
Â
On his success against TCU
"Coming into the game I just thought to myself that I have to do my 111%. I really just came in and tried to do what I could do to help the team win."
Â
On Mason Rudolph
"He threw the ball very efficiently today. He's a great quarterback out there and so is J.W. Walsh. That's one thing that we have that other teams don't is two great quarterbacks."
Â
Oklahoma State punter Zach Sinor
Â
On flipping the field for the team
"I just go out there and because my punt team is so awesome, I don't really have to worry about too many things happening. All I really have to do is get the ball down there, and I know they're going to get it."
Â
On the 9-0 start
"It's awesome. It's a complete turnaround from last season, and it's awesome just to be around this team. We're all coming together, and the team chemistry is right there. Everybody is playing for everybody else."
Â
On the atmosphereÂ
"It was loud. It was unbelievable. I've never been a part of a college football game that was that loud. It was loud at West Virginia a few weeks ago, but this was a lot louder than WVU."
Â
Oklahoma State offensive lineman Zachary Crabtree
Â
On the game
"I thought we played a good game. We had a great game plan, and we just executed. It was a great team win and all the coaches put us in a great position to go make plays and to help the team win."
Â
On the atmosphere's effect on the game
"It changed a lot. It gave us a lot of energy and we appreciate what the crowd did for us. We appreciate the fans and when this place gets going, it's loud, it's crazy and it's hard for opponents to come into."
Â
On the offensive line
"We're not doing anything different. We're just continuing to do the same things. We've got to fix a few things, but we've got to continue to push and work hard because those things have put us in great positions the last couple of weeks."
Â
TCU head coach Gary Patterson
Â
Opening statement
"First off, you have to give Coach Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys a lot of credit. They kicked our butts. You can't give up big plays, and you can't turn the ball over. If you do that, you're not going to win big ballgames. They had 30 plays and 28 points in the first half. We fought our ways back into it. Basically, the defense gave up one touchdown in the second half, but it was too late. You have to score and get yourself back into things. I give them all the credit."
Â
On how TCU will move forward
"We've got three ball games left to play, and we're going to try to win all three of those ball games. I don't know what the status is on Josh Doctson, but it wasn't good enough to get back in the game. We'll just have to see next week and go forward from there. Obviously, I felt for Trevone (Boykin) because he's worked so hard to be here. The bottom line is that we had to play better today and win. We play better at home, and we spot people too many points when we're on the road."
Â
On Boykin's performance
"He had a bad game. It just happened to be the game that we needed him to play well. You go in with a game plan to throw to No. 9 and then No. 9 isn't there anymore. Your whole set of rules change in this offense because we set plays up for people, and when that person leaves, then you take X amount of plays away. He has a certain amount of skills that the other guy doesn't have. He's a competitor. He's in there in tears right now because nobody in there hurts worse than he does right now. He's a competitor, and he'll get back in there next week."
Â
On the secondary
"They went quick a couple of times. The second touchdown was a hitch and go. The guy was supposed to be deep, and both of them broke up. He was just supposed to stay deep. In two of the big throws, one was a two-deep coverage and basically there was a man under, and I just have to call a better ball game until we play better."
Â
On if the OSU offense surprised him
"Nope. They scored 70 last week. I wasn't surprised by any of it, and I knew they were going to keep going at us. I would've done the same thing they did. That's their job. They scored and they tried to double-reverse pass, and when you play our offense you need to keep going until there's no time left. I would do the same thing."
Â
TCU safety Derrick Kindred
On Oklahoma State:
"[Oklahoma State] came out with a lot of fire and energy. They played up to their potential. We have to eliminate the big plays, but we didn't do very well in the first half."
On Mason Rudolph:
"[Rudolph] is a good quarterback – he didn't surprise me at all. They came in and played great. It was what we should expect from an 8-0 team."
On the postgame speech in the locker room:
"It was basically that Oklahoma State played a great game. We can't give up big plays like that or it'll hurt us like it did tonight."
TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin
On playing Oklahoma State:
"You're not going to come into an environment like this and have four turnovers and expect to win a game. We played a great football team, and Coach Gundy is a great coach so props to those guys."
On the environment inside Boone Pickens Stadium
"[Oklahoma State] does a good job here. They play great at home, most teams do. They're around a good fan base, good students, they get loud and their team feeds off their energy. They've got a good thing going here."
