Five Things You Didn't Know About Joe Burton
October 16, 2015 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – There's more to Oklahoma State wing Joe Burton than just basketball. Check out these five things you probably didn't know about the Houston native.
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
"I listen to music, I pray, I stretch by myself before I go out and stretch with the team. I kind of go off on my own and sit back and kind of chill. Last year, I used to take two laps around the gym before every game to get my sweat going and because I have some butterflies, so I just run it off."
How did you get to be in the middle of the hype circle?
"In the locker room we like to dance, get hyped and laugh. Somebody said, 'you have to do that in the circle,' and I said I would. I'm not a shy person, so it's not a problem for me to dance out there especially when I have all of my brothers and teammates surrounding me. I don't dance at a club or anything, I pretty much just do it for the team and around family."
As a Houston guy, did the Astros loss hurt?
"Not really. I'm not really a baseball guy. If I'm at home and a friend says that he has tickets to the Astros game, then I'll go, but I'm not really a baseball guy. I'm not really a football guy, either, unless I'm playing it. I played football before I played basketball, and growing up I was actually a Chargers fan. In every video game I would pick San Diego, I loved LaDainian Tomlinson and when he left, I just stopped watching football."
What is your most embarrassing moment on the court?
"I think I got hung up on the rim last year at homecoming and hoops. I was the first guy in the layup line and I got hung and I kept thinking this is not good. Everybody let out an, 'oh', and I was embarrassed. There was another one, too. When we played OU last year, I hadn't played in a while, so when I finally got in I put up a shot and it looked good but I completely air-balled it and the crowd let me know about it."
What is the significance behind your jersey number?
"When I first got here, I wanted No. 12, but that number was taken by Anthony Hickey, so I went with 4. 12 is important to me because when I was in high school, one of my friends passed away in a car accident and she wore 12 on the junior varsity squad. I was going to wear 12 to honor her, but 4 was her favorite number so that was my back up and that's what I got."
